# Marc Blake

> Marc Blake is a New Zealand contemporary artist based in Bannockburn, Central Otago. His practice centres on painting and the continual movement of lived experience, memory, events and relationships.

## Practice

Blake's paintings develop through extended cycles of making, altering and reconstruction. Personal histories, observations and photographic archives enter the process as working material rather than fixed subjects. Figures, landscapes, interiors and everyday moments are transformed through surface, gesture and material change, producing paintings that become new events rather than representations of a single remembered moment.

Photography, digital processes and memory are mechanisms within the work, not its primary subject. The practice remains grounded in the physical possibilities of painting and in the tension between permanence and change, recollection and invention.

## Background

Marc Blake was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He has lived in New Zealand, Japan and Australia and has close familial ties to Korea. He is currently based in Bannockburn, Central Otago.

## Awards, residencies and collections

Blake was the Supreme Winner of the 2023 Craigs Aspiring Art Award. He completed a studio residency and solo exhibition at BankART NYK, Yokohama, in 2005. His work is held in the Craigs Investment Partners Collection, the Arts House Trust Collection and private collections in New Zealand and internationally.
